Meet the authors

Arthur: an entrepreneur turned investor. He works as Principal at Knight Capital. Arthur started his career at Rocket Internet before joining several venture capital funds in the Seed and Series B+ stage. 

Diederik: an entrepreneur turned investor. He is the Co-founder and Managing Partner of Knight Capital, a venture capital fund that invests in entrepreneurs building the next generation of leading software companies. 

 

Paul: a serial entrepreneur turned investor. At 23 he co-founded the first event ticketing marketplace in Europe named GetMeIn which he sold to Ticketmaster/Livenation (NSYE:LYV). Paul Co-founded Knight Capital with Diederik.

What is the reason for writing this book?


Throughout our journey as entrepreneurs (and later on investors), we learned that a lot of great content is created on finding product-market-fit or sharing big success stories such as raising hundreds of millions of dollars or even multi-billion dollar exits. The content gap in between of these, let’s say, scaling from 1-25 million of annual revenues, has been largely untouched. In our experience, the best learnings often stems from own experience or from a founder in a network who has been in a similar situation. With this book, we aim to provide any startup enthusiast with first-hand experience from 47 experts on how to scale a business from Series A and beyond.




Does this book cover all stages of growth for a business?


The book primarily aims to fill the content gap of scaling businesses from $1 million to $25 million of annual revenues (broadly defined as the Series A to C stage). As such, the focus of the book is dedicated to these growth stages. Founders, however, also discuss their early steps and the transition to later growth stages or even the exits.




Does the book only cover tips for entrepreneurs from startups?


Although the book primarily addresses business challenges from scaling founders, it is a light-read and includes insights on a wide range of topics (HR, Sales, Go To Market, Marketing, Finance, Tech) from started, exited, and retired entrepreneurs and other experts. It provides valuable general insights on managing teams, incentivizing staff members and running businesses (along private lives!) to anyone, in a pleasant-to-read way.




What do I learn from the book?


By reading the story of 47 different practitioners, business challenges are approached from various angles. Sometimes the book will learn you to prevent mistakes that others have made before, sometimes the contributors will simply tell you to be pragmatic. Overall, the book is made to overcome the knowledge gap between successful founders and other experts, and starting entrepreneurs or enthusiasts on scaling businesses.




Has the content in the interviews been revised or marked up?


The interviews have not been marked up (other than a common edit on grammar).




What is the role of Knight Capital in writing this book?


The authors of the book are all investors at Knight Capital, an Amsterdam-based venture capital fund focused on B2B SaaS investments. The 47 conducted interviews, however, are held with industry experts outside the Knight Capital organization and the shared content from the interviews is independent from Knight Capital. Knight Capital has only been involved in supporting the authors with the launch, distribution and marketing of the book.




Where do the proceeds of the sale of the book go to?


The proceeds from the sale of the book will be fully donated to the Princes Maxima Centrum charity fund (https://www.prinsesmaximacentrum.nl/) in the Netherlands. This institution performs research to children that have cancer and they run a hospital where they treat these children. By buying this book and by sharing it with your friends, you make an impact to the life of others.
